Fever is a well-known and a very common problem for all human beings. According to dictionary fever defined as an abnormally high body temperature, usually accompanied by shivering, headache and some severe instances. If our body temperature increases above the normal temperature which is 98.4-99F, we call it as fever. If I’m not wrong everyone in their life has definitely experienced the fever at least once.
There are many causes to get a fever. We have different types of fever such as normal fever, bacterial infections, viral fevers and parasitic fever. Fever is not significantly a dangerous disease like for example if we have body temperature 100-100.5F, it is not a significantly dangerous. But, if your body temperature 103 or above it will be dangerous and also some viral & parasitic fevers also very dangerous.
Causes of Fever
Our body temperature is controlled by a part of the brain called Hypothalamus. Any infections to hypothalamus cause an increase in body temperature which results in fever. Below are some causes of different types of fever.
- Infections like cold gastroenteritis
- Bacterial infections
- Viral infections
- Parasitic infections
- Heat exhaustion and extreme sunburn
- Malignant tumors
- Side effects of drugs etc.
Different Types of Fever
As the name tells, bacterial attacks result in this fever. There are different infections bacteria can cause.
- Respiratory tract infections which show symptoms like high fever, cough, sputum, and breath shortness.
- Urinary Tract Infections shows symptoms like high fever with chills and rigor. Also causes frequent urination, burning sensation during urinating and a bit of stomach pain.
- Soft Tissue Infection causes swelling of skin at affected region and high fever.
- Gastro-Intestinal Infections shows symptoms like high fever with vomiting, loose motions with blood and abdominal pain.

Dengue: It’s a very dangerous fever also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever. It caused by DENV virus which is an RNA virus of family Flaviviridae. Shows symptoms like very high fever associated with a severe headache, body pains, backache, joint pains, rashes or red spots and vomiting. Blood platelets count decreases very fast and leads to bleeding. Need to consult a doctor at early stages of fever. Neglecting may lead to death also.
Chikungunya: It is also like dengue but not that dangerous. It spreads due to mosquito bites. Most common symptom is joint pains. Also causes a headache, muscle pain, and joint swelling. Symptoms begin from 3-7 days from mosquito bites. There is no special treatment or vaccine for chikungunya. It treated based on symptoms. Need to take more bed rest, fluids and medicines for specific symptoms showing. Body pains and joint pains may last for months.
Viral Hepatitis A or E: Causes by the hepatitis virus. Patients will have a low fever. The virus infects liver cells and causes inflammation which results in showing other symptoms. Symptoms are a pain in abdomen, joints, fever, vomiting, weight loss, yellow skin and eyes. Need to consult a doctor for proper treatment and prescription.
The human body is the host for many parasites. All parasites don’t harm our body. But, some will cause dangerous fevers. Below are some fevers caused by parasites.
Malaria: It is caused by plasmodium parasite. It spreads through mosquito bites. Shows symptoms like high fever, sweating, body pains and also leads to anemia or jaundice. Consult doctor as early as you see symptoms for proper treatment.
Filariasis: Filariasis caused by parasite roundworm of type filarioidea. Shows symptoms as temperatures can go up to 103-104F with chills and rigor. Pain and swelling in the groin and lower limbs are observed.
Typhoid: It is caused by parasite salmonella typhi. It spreads through eating or drinking contaminated food or water. Shows symptoms like high fever, shivering, headache and diarrhea.
So these are the different types of fever. Prevention is better than cure. So, take care before you get a fever. Most fevers spread through mosquitoes and contaminated food and water. So, always be clean and keep your surroundings clean. Use mosquito coils and mosquito nets to protect from mosquito bites. Drink only purified water. Wash your hands before eating.
